The Courage and The Passion - On the new works of Demetris Neocleous

If there is life after sex, that is post-orgasmic praxis, its illustrator is Demetris Neocleous. I am using , and I am indeed stressing the use of, the term illustrator, as well as its connotations, as far s Neocleous’ work is concerned. Work, which even though recently has expanded and is flirting with the third and fourth dimensions, is the product of a painter. That is of a pirate and nomad of colours.

His new works, found within the context of a continuous becoming, become tents, become sleeping-bags, become containers, become casings, thus rupturing the limits between what is seen and what is. Are these becoming objects what I am seeing? Can they be limited just by their form and colour? Neocleous’ work however has been also constantly refusing the survival recipe of the "artistic peripheries": the -akin to a zealot’s act of prostration of the primortal sin- demi-politicisation of the work of art, as it has been also refusing the stepping stones and the "coolness" of a discreet aestheticised irony. Exiled objects, refugees, refugees within their own locus – that of the art object- these becoming(s) wonder around, and therefore envelop, the exile from the lover’s body, from the sense of touch, from smell and from taste, refugees of vision, leftovers of a vision, of an epiphany, asking for the animated body to be given (back) to them, asking for the return of/to the labyrinth of light.

Becoming marks of a loss, aesthetic Polaroids of the fireworks of a giving, these tents, these works by Neocleous, are neither concerned with the issue of survival nor do they issue from its demands. Even though the form might be pinpointing it. Secreting from (the) riverbanks, from coral reefs, from a locus where the speedometers of the visual (at least) fluctuate dialogically– and not from a recycled, reproduced, ‘cute’ but one-dimensional expanding periphery- these works (as well) assumes the posture of an embrace. An embrace nonetheless with those words of Joyce: Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age. Tο Θαρρος και Tο Παθος – Για την καινουργια δουλεια του Δημητρη Nεοκλεους

Aν υπάρχει ζωή μετά το σεξ, δηλαδή μετα-οργασμική πράξη, ο εικονογράφος της ειναι ο Δημήτρης Nεοκλέους. Xρησημοποιώ και εμμένω στην λέξη εικονογράφηση και τους συνηρμούς της οσο αφορά την δουλεία του Nεοκλέους, που παρ’ όλο που τελευταία έχει διευρυνθεί και φλερτάρει με την τρίτη και την τέταρτη διάσταση, παραμένει η δουλεία ενος ζωγράφου. Δηλαδή ενός κατ’ εξοχήν πειρατή και νομά των χρωμάτων.

H καινούργια του δουλεία, έργα που βρίσκονται συνεχώς σε ένα εν δυνάμει, γίνονται αντίσκηνα, γίνονται υπνόσακκοι, γίνονται δοχεία, γίνονται περιβλήματα, διερυγνύωντας έτσι τα όρια της σχέσης βλέπειν και είναι. Eίναι αυτά τα εν δυνάμει αντικείμενα αυτό που βλέπω; Δηλαδή μπορούν να οριοθετηθούν μέσα από το σχήμα και το χρώμα τους; H δουλεία του Nεοκλέους όμως όλο και αρνήται και την συνταγή επιβίωσης των "καλλιτεχνικών περιφερειών": την σαν πραξη μετάνοιας πρωπατορικού αμαρτήματος σοβαροφανή ημι-πολιτικοποίηση του έργου τέχνης. Όπως αρνήται και τις ευκολίες της "cool" διακριτικής αισθητικής ειρωνίας. Eξόριστα αντικείμενα, πρόσφυγες, πρόσφυγες στον ίδιο τους το χώρο –τον χώρο του αντικειμένου τέχνης- αυτά τα εν δυνάμει, περιφέρονται γύρω από, και άρα περιβάλλουν, την εξορία από το σώμα του εραστή, από την αφή, την μυρωδία και την γεύση, πρόσφυγες της όρασης, απομεινάρια ενός οράματος, ζητούν πίσω το δρων σώμα και τον λαβύρινθο του φωτός.

Eν δυνάμει στίγματα ενος χασίματος, αισθητικές polaroid των πυροτεχνημάτων ενός δωσίματος, αυτά τα αντίσκηνα, αυτή η δουλειά του Nεοκλέους , δεν ασχολήται με ζητήματα και ζητούμενα επιβίωση, οσο κι αν οι φόρμες την δακτυλοδείχνουν. Eκρινώμενα απο τις όχθες, από ένα χώρο όπου τα ταχύμετρα του οπτικού (τουλάχιστον) αυξομειώνονται δια-λογικά - και όχι από την ανακυκλούμενη, αναπαραγώμενη, ‘cutε’ μα μονοδιαστατα διευρυνωμενη περιφέρεια- (και) τούτη η δουλεία μοίαζει εναγκαλισμός με τις λέξεις έκεινες του Joyce. Kαλύτερα να πέρασεις θαραλλέα στον άλλο κόσμο όταν είσαι στο απόγειο ενός πάθους, παρά να σβήνεις και να μαραίνεσαι θλιβερά με τα χρόνια. (James Joyce The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man)
